ReActing well to the recession?

Just a quick post whilst I’m tucking away a chicken Caesar sandwich in Terra Nova. Some good news for Wales; unemployment is falling here in stark contrast to the rest of Britain where it is rising. Rhodri Morgan has said that this good sign shows that the Welsh economy is resisting the pressures of the recession and is encouraged by the progress shown. Cheryl Gillan on the other hand is urging caution - let's not get overexcited is her message.

These figures must be good news for Welsh Labour and may offer them a glimmer of hope for all the elections coming their way in the next few years. If these trends continue then they can legitimately claim that they have saved Welsh jobs (through their policies like ProAct and ReAct) and will surely therefore gain a degree of respect and popularity with a large proportion of the electorate.

All of Welsh Labour must have every possible finger crossed that these figures are not just a flash in the pan, at the moment it looks like these figures and their continued success is Welsh Labour’s only weapon in the face of electoral disaster.

You do know the economy is Ieuan Wyn Jones' protfolio? Comes to something when Welsh labour's only weapon in the face of electoral disaster is the work of a Plaid Minister. Equally they face electoral disaster in Westminster - that the Assembly is delivering where they are not only emphasises how badly Welsh Labour MPs have been performing.

Anon,

Yet again you show a lack of understanding of how government works. It is not 'top trumps' where Ministers are silo'd in fiefdoms...

Yet again? Where have I posted on this before? However, my point remains. This is Ieuan Wyn Jones' portfolio so he is in charge of its success and failure. Either way how could it possibly be Labour's success. Or do you not take issue with what PC have posted.

I'm always amazed at how govt ministers trumpet the success of ReAct - as if it was a brilliant new scheme devised to counter the effects of the recession. It's been going for years.... I got a ReAct grant 3 yrs ago after redundancy.

Anon,

Sorry - i meant yet again people are playing top trumps.

Your point doesnt make sense, it is, regardless of how we dress it up, a Labour led coalition. The programme of government was drawn up in partnership...

Are you saying Rhodri morgan shouldnt claim a success of a policy? He is the top dog and leader of Welsh Labour.

Surely, taking your logic, Plaid cannot claim credit for education, health, child poverty etc? That is just silly and not how government's work.

I think both parties should be able and proud of what they have achieved.

I dont think your point makes sense. Each Minister is responsible for their portfolios. where they have success it is down to their work. Where there is failure they must take responsibility. IWJ has done well and deserve praise. In Edwina Labour have a trump for doing well on health. On education, ummm sorry Labour Jane hutt is all yours!
